The work to disinfect the Piute Mountain school of E.coli contamination continues this week and will keep the school closed longer than expected.

It's a story 29 Eyewitness News first uncovered last week. Monday school officials say it is taking longer than first thought to clean out the school's water system. Piute Mountain School uses a water system that is monitored by the state on a monthly basis. It tested positive for E.coli last Monday. The school is cleaning out its water system and stresses there is no threat to students.

Officials now have to chlorinate the system, let it sit and then flush it out. This has to be repeated twice for two negative sample readings.

Health officials say the type of E.coli found is not the severe strain that can cause death, but instead is naturally occurring at very low levels.

There are no reports of illness.

The school is expected to be up and running by next Monday.
