BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — A Bakersfield family contacted Eyewitness News after they say a malicious maneuver almost turned their weekend off-road riding trip into a disaster.

The family said they discovered several traps on trails near Mesa Marin, including three trenches had been dug along the trail.

More disturbing was the generous amount of construction nails, roofing pins and other sharp objects that caused several hundred dollars in damage to the family's tires.

Further down the trail, the family discovered a hill that riders typically ride down had been clipped. What was once a simple slope was now a blind cliff.

Residents living nearby shared a different perspective.

A man living in the neighborhood describes how residents are tired of having their family gatherings ruined by off-road riders speeding just a few feet from their back gates.

Although he doesn't know who dug the ditches, he’s grateful for the peace and quiet he now has.
