Mother distraught when child disappears from bus stop
By Carol Ferguson, Eyewitness News
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- A mother is angry that her young child disappeared from a school bus stop, and she's frustrated at the response she's getting from school officials.
The 5-year-old was returned to her mother, but she had apparently been allowed to leave the bus stop with a parent the family does not know. It happened Friday afternoon, and Shameka Morris told Eyewitness News she couldn't get answers from the Fairfax School District at the time, and she's still not satisfied with the response. "For that to happen, somebody should be held accountable," Morris said Monday morning. Morris lives across the street from the bus stop near South Fairfax and south of Highway 58. The mother thinks the bus must have come early, because she waited and never saw it Friday afternoon. After waiting past the usual time, Morris said she called the school district. The mother said school officials asked the bus driver what happened. "The bus driver says, all the kids are off the bus -- maybe she's sleeping on the bus," Morris related. "They have him re-check the bus, it's clear. So, where's my baby?" The mother now thinks when the bus arrived, the driver let her 5-year-old go with another parent who was waiting there. Eyewitness News found a neighbor around the corner who says she and another parent took the child with them, thinking they would help out the mother. The neighbor said she left a note on the family's house, but they didn't see it. The parent said she took the little girl back to her home at about 4 p.m. But, Morris said she had gotten, desperate not knowing where the little girl was, and she had called police. Morris said officers were there when the other mother brought the child over. Morris said Fairfax School District policy says any Kindergarten student must be picked up at a bus stop by a parent, or returned to the school. District Superintendent Desiree Von Flue said they are looking into what happened on Friday. "Our normal procedure is that our Kindergarten students should be met at the bus stop by their parent," Von Flue said, acknowledging that did not happen in this case. "No, it appears the student was going home with another friend, and went home with another parent." But, Morris said her child was not with the parent of a classmate. "The lady that got my baby, I don't even know," Morris insisted. On Monday, the same bus driver was on the route near Morris' home. It was an earlier scheduled stop, and several children got off the bus where parents waited. Morris confronted the driver. "You're not supposed to give my baby to nobody, you're supposed to call the school, that's the procedure," she scolded. Morris said the driver was new, but he had been on her child's route for the entire previous week. Other parents at the stop said they also had concerns. "They usually call us and let us know -- where were you? to come and get your kid," step-father Phillip Capps said. He noted on Monday the bus driver had a list, and he was checking students getting off the bus. Capps and his wife said the driver did not have a list on Friday. Morris thinks the bus driver should be fired, and she's not satisfied with the explanation a school official gave her on Friday. "She said it was a mistake," Morris said. "It's not a mistake, because what if they would have come and my baby was dead? Or we really couldn't find my baby?" Superintendent Von Flue said the district will review their policies with employees and parents, and they will communicate with this family. She verified the driver was new, but said he had been trained. Von Flue would not say if any action will be taken against the driver, saying the situation is still being investigated. Von Flue said the district had reviewed procedures with this driver on Monday regarding confirming students on the bus. The superintendent said the district is committed to student safety. "We're very grateful that the child was safe, and we'll be reviewing procedures to ensure that we have student safety in hand at all times." |
