State comes down on trailer park owner
By Betsy Lambert, Eyewitness News
OILDALE, Calif. -- The California Department of Housing is coming down on a trailer park owner who has left his residents with unsafe conditions.
The effort comes because of a team effort from Eyewitness News and Kern County Supervisor Mike Maggard's office, which asked the state to investigate the conditions at the trailer park after receiving calls and reports about the problems. Power was shut off to the park on Monday because of an unpaid electric bill and according to the Department of Housing tenants in spaces 15 through 20 do not have hot water. Those tenants say they have not had hot water for at least two months. Maggard's office became aware of the conditions at this park in the beginning of November and wrote a letter to the Department of Housing at that time, stating there was raw sewage on ground. Then, a second letter was written on Dec. 15 about the power being turned off. Maggard asked for immediate attention. Jose Perez, the owner of the trailer park, told Eyewitness News he paid the bill on Tuesday, but according to pacific Gas & Electric, when they went to turn the electricity back on the main switch gear was broken, so an emergency permit had to be issued to fix the problem before PG&E could turn back on the power. Perez, who lives in Temecula, also said he has had problems with this park for a long time now and he is "ready to throw in the towel in the whole thing." Perez said tenants are late paying rent and tenants, such as Rick Baker, admit it. "Everybody decided they weren't going to pay for it until its livable. ... If he wants people to pay their rent, do something around here," Baker said. Chris Anderson, chief of field operations for the California Department of Housing, said by Friday a final notice letter will be issued to Perez. That letter will demand that Perez brings the property up to code within 30 days. Anderson said if Perez does not comply, criminal charges could be filed with the district attorney. |
