BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- James Pasavat and his family were enjoying a quiet afternoon over the weekend when Anita Gonzales knocked at the door.

Pasavat said Gonzales told him she was from the U.S. Census Bureau, but her survey paperwork told a different story. Her paperwork indicated she was with the National Opinion Research Center, based at the University of Chicago.

Pasavat said he declined to fill out the voluntary paperwork, but he accused Gonzales of refusing to leave.

Frustrated, Pasavat said he made up a story about being recruited by the same company, and the woman finally left.

Local Census representative Reyna Olaguez advised anyone wary of someone claiming to represent the Census Bureau to ask for identification. All Census workers will have an official identification badge.
