BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- A pink toy poodle is causing quite a stir.
Pebbles is a service dog and is trained to help her owner, Roni Hoggins, with her disabilities. Hoggins said Pebbles can tell when she is going to have a seizure and alerts someone when that's going to happen.
Pebbles is bright pink, and often brings unwanted attention. Most recently, on Nov. 27, at the Denny's restaurant on Panama Lane, Hoggins said she was refused service.
"(The manager) just insinuated that she was not a service dog. 'We won't accept her,' and that you need to leave," Hoggins said.
She tried to show the manager Pebbles' tags that show she is a service dog and even offered up the prescription that shows she is able to have the dog with her, but she said the manager told her that Denny's "only accepts service dogs that are wearing a vest."
Brandy Morgan from the Independent Living Center said Denny's broke the law, and under the Americans with Disabilities Act, businesses are only allowed to ask two questions: Is that a service animal and how does the animal help you?
Denny's corporate office quickly responded to Eyewitness News' questions about the denial. The restaurant chain apologized in a written statement, saying "Denny's should have accepted the fact that the customer indicated the dog was a service animal."
