Woman unhappy she was denied dog adoption

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- "That's Peewee. A little dog from when I was little," said Ashley Inglis as she pointed at a picture.

Peewee passed away about 10 years ago but has always had a special place in Inglis' heart.

Inglis saw a dachshund she wanted to adopt last week at the local shelter for the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, but she was given bad news.

"It was being saved for Wednesday," Inglis said.

Wednesday also happens to be the day the SPCA holds its annual fund-raising and adoption event. But with the shelter operating at full capacity, Inglis doesn't understand why the SPCA would hold animals when they could be adopted out to loving homes.

"For every dog that we take, we can get a few more in there, off the street, and out of abusive situations," argued Inglis.

Chuck Nordstrom, from the SPCA, says it's up to the kennel manager to set an animal's adoption date.

"It can be any date she sets. There's no other requirement other than the minimum by state law," explained Nordstrom. "Unfortunately, it seems like she wants the policy to change just for her."

For strays, like the dachshund, the state requires the SPCA keep them for 96 hours.

But the dachshund has been there for almost two and a half weeks. She's microchipped, fixed and ready to go.

At last year's event, the SPCA adopted out 50 animals in one day. While Inglis doesn't dispute the importance of those numbers, she's frustrated. And for her, it's more than just about this one little dachshund.

"You wanna do the right thing. You wanna get the dog out of there. They preach it to you. You hear about it all the time. You go down there and do that, and you're turned away," said Inglis.
