BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- The Bakersfield Homeless Center is seeing a "new face of homelessness," officials say.

They say more children and families are homeless and their facility is running at capacity every night.

Britney Rene and her 18-month-old son are new to living on the streets. The pair was turned away from the Bakersfield Homeless Center because there were no more beds available.

"Its really scary," said Rene. "You have no where to go, and you don't know what to do."

Rene turned to the Independent Living Center in Bakersfield as a last resort.

"Its bad when you hear that a disabled mother and her child can't get a bed in a homeless center," said Brandy Morgan of the Independent Living Center.

Bakersfield Homeless Center officials say this is the worst they have ever seen this situation. Center officials claim they are turning people away almost every night. Director Louis Gill says it's been heartbreaking for the staff to see these children with nowhere to go.

All the emergency beds are being used at the center and everyday the food supply is low, but the staff is managing to feed and house all they are able to and still meet state codes.

Donations are needed. Donations can be dropped off at 1600 E. Truxtun Ave. Monday through Friday, 8-5pm. The Bakersfield Homeless Center can be reached at (661) 322-9199.
