Student banned for graduation over missing bus
Salmo Contreres By Betsy Lambert, Eyewitness News
Salmo Contreres is just days away from graduating from Curran Middle School, but on Monday he was suspended and told he can't participate in graduation.
This all started during a school trip to Six Flags Magic Mountain. The buses were due to leave at 6 p.m. sharp. When 6 rolled around, 14-year-old Salmo and another classmate were not on the bus. The field trip permission slip said that if a student didn't make it back to the bus on time they would have to get a ride from an adult. That's what he did, deciding to stay. He called his mom and told her he would be getting a ride with a friend's mom later. A teacher called Salmo and told him he needed to get to the buses within 10 minutes or he would be suspended. According to the district, he was suspended for willfully disrupting school activities or defying a valid authority. Since Monday's suspension, Salmo has received almost 3,000 MySpace comments from friends upset over the decision. A petition has also been started at his school urge the principal to allow Salmo to return. Bakersfield City School District officials say they can't comment on student cases. They do say every suspension is up to the school's principal. |
