Decoding online shorthand: The acronyms parents should know
By Anthony Bailey, Eyewitness News
Code phrases are commonly used in text messages and online chats.
While "P911," may not mean anything to the over-30 set, many kids knows exactly what it means: "My parent just walked into the room, and we need to stop talking about what we don't want them to know." Instant message acronyms, or IM codes, are being used by teens across the world to keep parents clueless. Recently, Eyewitness News gathered 20 of the most popular codes and set out to see if parents and teens were on the same page. While most teens recognized the IM codes, parents were far less knowledgeable about the online alphabet soup. So, here's 20 of the most common IM codes and what they mean: POS - Parents Over Shoulder PIR - Parents In Room P911 - Parent Alert PWA - Parents Are Watching PAL - Parents Are Listening ASL - Age, Sex and Location? MorF - Male or Female? SorG - Straight or Gay?
