Complaints against Shaolin Kenpo Karate Schools of Bakersfield started rolling into the Better Business Bureau Tuesday. The Shaolin Kenpo Karate schools, also know as Family Self Defense Centers had two locations, one at 920 Wible Road, the other one at White Lane and Gosford Road, both now closed with no explanation. Eyewitness news met a large group of parents Tuesday night at the Wible location who say they are shocked and left wondering what to do next.

Shaolin Kenpo Karate of Bakersfield, or Family Self Defense Centers, closed it's doors sometime over the weekend, and their customers claim they're children's summer fun has been karate chopped below the belt. Frustrated parents contacted Eyewitness News saying each had spent over one hundred dollars for classes. The group we met on Tuesday alone recently put more than one thousand dollars into the company for tuition in the last month. One parent who took their child to class last Thursday told us "They didn't give us any indication that there was a problem whatsoever, we were going to classes on White Lane and Gosford classes went on as usual." Another parent, Jeanne Castellon, says she paid the owner James Riley, $300 dollars for three months of classes less than two weeks ago, and says Riley was still collecting tuition just days before the company cleared out.

Parents received a letter post dated July 5Th, letting parents know that the schools would be closing down two days later on July 7Th. No promise of refunds, but a note encouraging students to continue karate. One student told us he felt sad and had hopped he would get his black belt. His mother says if she finds another karate class, if she can even afford one, her son will have to start from scratch and work his way back up.

We called the number listed on the ad, parents tell us it's the cell phone of the owner, James Riley. We left a message and still haven't heard back. Still no answer for parents either, who say although the hit to the pocket book hurts, they are more worried about their kids. Castellon expressed her disappointment saying "It's frustrating because this art is supposed to teach respect and discipline and obviously these people have no respect for other people."
