$10 million donation could revolutionize cancer treatment

SEATTLE -- One of the largest donations ever made to the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center could revolutionize the face of cancer treatment.
Monday, the parents of Amazon.com founder Jeff Bezos donated $10 million to the center, specifically to the study of immunotherapy. It's a treatment researchers believe could open the door to the final stage in the war against cancer. Researchers hope to use a person's own immune system to fight cancer cells, essentially curing them without chemotherapy or radiation. "Our dream, our hope is that someday, someday maybe in the not so distant future, the way that cancer will be treated is that you'll go to your doctor once a year, you'll have a blood test that test will tell you if you have an early cancer in your body," said Dr. Fred Appelabum with the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. "If there is, it'll be removed when it's still very small and we'll be able to vaccinate you from it ever returning. but, can we get there? It'll take lots and lots of work, it'll be lots of small steps, and gifts such as this one give us the tools to do that." He says he doesn't want to give false hope, but he sees this research making a difference within the next 5 years. Right now, immunotherapy has already had successes in blood cancers like leukemia and lymphoma. Now, he says they're focusing on melanoma and renal cell cancer. Other targets they're working on include breast cancer, prostate cancer and colon cancer -- some of the more common cancers out there. The Bezos family is giving the gift in the form of a challenge. They hope their donation will encourage others give as well, and help the center raise $28 million for the research. |
