BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) - Scruffy to Fluffy pet spa and the Bakersfield Pet Food Pantry came together Sunday to raise money.

The goal was to help those struggling financially to keep their beloved pets fed.

Pooches were lined up to take a bath to help out their own kind.

Cindy Frye started the Bakersfield Pet Food Pantry.

"There's a lot of people that are struggling right now out there and we just want to help them keep their pets so they don't have to go to the animal shelter. And we all know what happens there," said Frye.

She teamed up with the owners of the Scruffy to Fluffy Pet Spa to drum up donations from dog owners with warm hearts.

Chris Rivera is co-owner of the spa and decided to help out by donating 50 percent of the day's profits to the pantry.

"Because of the economy, the financial difficulties some families were having feeding their pets, she came up with the idea of fundraising to donate food to these families to keep their pets fed," said Rivera.

And those donations have come a long way in feeding those pets who may have otherwise gone hungry.

"We have distributed over 125,000 pounds of food in the four and a half years," said Fry.  "In August alone, we did well over 4,000 pounds."

The pantry also works with feeding dogs of homeless owners at Saint Vincent de Paul and distributes pet food with the Meals on Wheels program.

The red donation bins are located at several Bakersfield businesses. If you want to donate or have a business and want to place a bin in your store, click here.
