BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — Thousands of new homes could be coming to Kern County.

Tejon Ranch Co. wants to build 12,000 homes and condos at the foot of the Grapevine.

“We think it’s something Kern County will be proud of,” said Barry Zoeller, vice president of the Tejon Ranch Co.

In August, the company proposed plans for a new 8,000-acre retail mall in that same area. The application is still pending.

The company said the new community would house workers of Tejon’s industrial and retail developments.

“We think it will be a model development and an economic engine,” said Zoeller.

He said the planning is in the infant stages and was unable to give a timetable for when the project could be completed.

“Grapevine” is the current name of the proposed development.
