Outlets at Tejon expect 200K shoppers on opening weekend

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) - The Outlets at Tejon open in less than a day, and officials are encouraging Bakersfield residents to take an alternate route to avoid congestion at Interstate 5 and Laval Road.

The 320,000-square-foot center, featuring more than 70 retailers and restaurants, is just south of the high-traffic junction of I-5 and Highway 99.

Officials with the center say they expect between 200,000 and 250,000 shoppers during the opening weekend, counting Thursday and Friday.

The suggested alternate route:

  • Go south on Hwy. 99
  • Exit at either Bear Mountain Boulevard or David Road
  • Take those roads east to Wheeler Ridge Road
  • Take Wheeler Ridge south to the outlet center

"We are expecting large numbers of people for the opening on Thursday and throughout the weekend so we want to ensure that everyone who is driving out to visit the center has as smooth an experience as possible," Barry Zoeller, vice president of corporate communications and marketing for the Tejon Ranch Co., said in a news release. "We think this alternative route for travelers coming from Bakersfield will provide relief for any back up that may occur at Laval Road."

A sold-out VIP preview party will benefit charities and take place Wednesday night.
