BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — Tax time is here, and with it comes tax fraud schemes.

Eyewitness News went to Kern County's tax professionals for advice on having a successful - and safe - tax-filing season. Among the best advice: Use a licensed tax preparer.

And, although most tax preparation generally comes at a cost, programs like Volunteer Income Tax Assistance offer preparation services for free.

Advances in technology are also making the process easier for the consumer to complete on their own, and in their own home.
