Fatal crash sends car into almond orchard

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — A Buena Park woman is dead after her car flipped over and landed in an almond orchard near Highway 99.

The woman rear-ended a Toyota just before midnight Saturday, California Highway Patrol officials said.

Laurie Ann Wagner Peralta, 41 of Buena Park, was driving her Ford Explorer north in the left lane of Hwy. 99 just north of the Interstate 5 overcrossing, the highway patrol said in a press release. Soon, she caught up with a Toyota 4-Runner driven by Mary Silva, of Bakersfield, who was driving in the right lane.

Peralta was driving faster than Silva, who reported to responding officers that she was driving at 68-70 mph, and drifted into the right lane when she approached Silva's car. The cars hit, and Peralta lost control of her vehicle, the CHP said.

The Explorer went towards the right shoulder, flipped over and came to a stop in an almond orchard next to the roadway. CHP officials said that Peralta was pinned inside her vehicle. Emergency crews pronounced her dead on the scene.
