Coroner: Young child died of multiple blunt-force injuries

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — The Kern County coroner's office said Tuesday that a child was killed by multiple blunt-force injuries.

A 17-year-old babysitter has been arrested on suspicion of murdering the boy.

Kai'Dan Timothy Webb, 1, stopped breathing around 3:15 a.m. Monday at an apartment on the 1700 block of Jefferson Street. Emergency crews rendered medical aid and rushed the boy to nearby Kern Medical Center, but Kai'Dan was pronounced dead around 6:45 a.m. The Kern County Sheriff's Office previously said Kai'Dan was 2, and Eyewitness News is working to confirm his age.

Investigators had immediately started questioning the teenager who had been babysitting the toddler. By Monday afternoon, officers said they developed probable cause to arrest her.

The girl's name was withheld.

"There was some evidence that the boy had been assaulted," sheriff's department spokesman Ray Pruitt told Eyewitness News on Monday. He would not provide details about the signs of assault.

The teenager was described by the sheriff's office as an "acquaintance of the victim's mother." The sheriff's office didn't say whether the girl had a previous relationship with Kai'Dan, but two neighbors told Eyewitness News that the child's mother had let the teenager care for her boy in the past.
