Citizen efforts fail to stop utility rate hike in Delano; City Council now votes

DELANO, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) - A utility rate hike seems likely in Delano despite a petition effort by citizens opposing the increase.

Residents protested the rate hike, reportedly collecting hundreds of signatures on a petition. City manager Maribel Reyna told Eyewitness News on Friday that the signatures were counted and officials found too many signatures that couldn't be verified. So, Reyna said, the petition failed.

City Council will hold a special meeting noon Monday to vote on the hike, which would bump rates by $65 over the next five years.
