BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- A Shafter man was sentenced Wednesday to at least 25 years in prison for killing a toddler in 2008.

Josue Herrera was babysitting 2-year-old Guillermo Gonzalez -- his girlfriend's son -- when the boy suffered severe head trauma. Herrera claimed the boy slipped and fell, but he was charged with first-degree murder.

He was ultimately found guilty of second-degree murder and child abuse causing death.

Herrera has a criminal record dating back to 1994, according to Kern County court records. Herrera has been charged in the past with spousal abuse, driving under the influence of alcohol, unlawful sexual intercourse and hit-and-run.
