WASCO, Calif. -- A crash between a big rig and a car killed one person and shut down traffic for most of the evening Monday at the intersection of Kimberlina Road and Highway 43.

The crash happened just before 6:30 p.m.

The big rig hauling two trailers was making a left-hand turn when it was broadsided by the car according to Kern County Sheriff's investigators.

The first arriving fire engine described the car as totally demolished and noted there were two people pinned inside, one obviously dead. The car's driver was airlifted to Kern Medical Center after being cut out of the vehicle. His injuries were described as major.

Beer cans were strewn around the crash scene. But what role alcohol played in the crash wasn't yet clear.

The intersection was reopened around 10 p.m.
