Tehachapi couple jailed for baby's murder

TEHACHAPI, Calif. -- A 7-month-old girl was Tehachapi's first homicide victim of the year, and a young couple is now facing charges.
On Nov. 30, Tehachapi police got a call of an infant not breathing on the 200 block of West E Street. After arriving, officers quickly realized that something wasn't right. "It was apparent that the infant suffered traumatic injuries," said Detective Denise Brown. The baby's mother, 19-year-old Monika Patterson, and her live-in boyfriend, 22-year-old Alex Vasquez, told officers that the injuries came from the baby falling out of a bouncer. However, Brown said the baby's injuries were more severe than a simple fall. "Many, many bruises on her face, fractured skull, broken ribs, broken arm," Brown said. Both Patterson and Vasquez were arrested on suspicion of child abuse the day police were called. Two days later, the baby died at a hospital from her injuries, and murder charges became likely. Brown said the right people are in custody. "The night of the event, when the child was severely beaten, the suspect, Alex Vasquez, admitted to doing it," Brown said. It's not known why Vasquez would have hurt the infant. "If anybody has information on suspected child abuse, or elder abuse, please get the authorities involved," Brown said. Vasquez faces second-degree murder and assault charges. The mother, Patterson, is jailed on suspicion of being an accessory to the crime. |
