CSUB students hurting from budget cuts hold symbolic bake sale
By Amber Smith, Eyewitness News
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- California has been hit with some deep budget cuts this year, and cuts at the local university were no exception.
The state recently cut the California State University system by more than a half a billion dollars, and that meant fee increases, larger class sizes, furlough days and enrollment reductions for all of California State University, Bakersfield. "Right now, I'm very disappointed about the California Legislature, because it's really disgraceful that they're not prioritizing higher education," said Student Body President Stephen Muchinyi. In response to the state's budget cuts to the CSU system, CSUB Associated Students held a symbolic bake sale to raise awareness about budget cuts and gain support for a bill that could bring some much-needed revenue to the university. "We are doing a bake sale for higher education," said ASI Vice President of External Affairs Ruth Leon. "It's a symbolic gesture. We're just trying to get the message out that they're paying a lot more than they used to two years ago, three years ago." ASI is trying to get students to support bill Assembly Bill 656, an oil and gas severance tax where 60 percent of the revenue generated from the tax would go to the CSU system. |
