BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - A two vehicle accident on State Route 43 leaves three people dead, including two children.

The accident, which happened just before 4:00pm on Sunday, was supposed to be a routine traffic stop. "The motor officer was driving north bound on State Route 43 near Stockdale Highway," said CHP Capt. Brian Smith. "(The officer) observed an SUV at 83 miles and hour southbound."

The officer then made a U-turn to pull the SUV over, but according to Capt. Smith, "The SUV actually appeared that it had accelerated; passing other vehicles."

Before the officer could get to the SUV, CHP says the driver swerved into the opposing lane and ran head on into a truck towing a motorhome trailer with a family inside. One child was thrown from the SUV, and according to Capt. Smith the officer tried to perform CPR on the victims, but it was no use. "The suspect, due to the crash, his wife was killed and his two small children were pretty much killed on impact," said Capt. Smith.

According to CHP, the family in the SUV was from Delano, and the family in the truck, which was carrying a couple and their four teenagers, is from Bakersfield. CHP believes both families were returning home from the holiday weekend.

The driver of the SUV, who allegedly caused the deadly accident, was reportedly taken to the hospital by helicopter for treatment.

The victims in the truck were also taken to hospital and Capt. Smith adds, "We're praying now that they're going to be okay, some looked more severe then others, but we're hoping everything will be alright with them."

Capt. Smith says a blood alcohol test will be given to the driver of the SUV; no word yet on what the results are.

As for the survivors of the accident, there are no updates as to their conditions.
