Dozens participate in memorial ride for cyclist
By Jose Gaspar, Eyewitness News
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- When the mass group of cyclists started assembling at the Liberty Bell preparing for a memorial ride for Alton Saceaux, son Cory was clearly touched by the show of support for his dad.
"It means everything...my dad was a very social person and to see all these people come out and support him and ride for him means a lot to me, " said son Cory. Cory made it a point to ride the same bicycle his dad rode when he made a trip between Bakersfield and Canada--a trip of 1, 367 miles. "My dad died what he loved to do, we want to honor him, "said another son, Andre. The 55-year-old Saceaux was killed by an alleged drunk driver when he was riding his bike on South Union Avenue at Kaiser Lane. The California Highway Patrol says the driver, 67-year-old Douglas Kaiser, reportedly fled the scene and then returned. He was arrested and is facing charges of gross vehicular homicide and driving under the influence. The memorial ride started at the Liberty Bell and made its way south down Chester Avenue. Many were hugging each other as they remembered Alton Saceaux. Arin Resnicke was riding a two seater bicycle but with no rider in the back--just a helmet strapped on to the seat to symbolize the missing rider. "This represents our fallen comrade," said Resnicke. "This is what happens when you drink and drive," said Resnicke as he struggled for words and composure. Everyone safely arrived at the site of the accident. The memorial ride was organized by Tina Chapa of Bike Bakersfield. Chapa hopes this latest incident is the motivating force to make everyone aware of bicyclists on the road. "There has to be a lot of education between drivers and cyclists both about how we can both share the road and be safe, " said Chapa. |
