WWII vet gets overdue medals
By Jose Gaspar, Eyewitness News
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- When he saw the medals on the uniforms of his two grandsons who serve in the military, Walter Truax wondered why he never received the medals he had earned as a Staff Sergeant and squad leader during World War II.
"Today we're going to present to you the medals that you have earned," Representative Kevin McCarthy told Truax and family members. Apparently Truax never got his military medals--9 of them including the Silver Star and Bronze Star Medal---because of an Army snafu. And though he had asked for help from another organization nothing happened. So Truax asked McCarthy's office for help and it came through with the long overdue medals. Out of all the medals, Truax says he most values the Combat Infantryman Badge 1st Award. "This one you really earned, remember the men that didn't come back," said Truax. |
