Police seek suspected cigarette store robber
By Sabrina Rodriguez, Eyewitness News
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- Police are looking for a man suspected of assaulting a cigarette store clerk with a stun gun.
Officers released surveillance video Wednesday in an effort to elicit information leading to the man's capture. Watch the uncut surveillance video of the robbery » The man is accused of entering Bargain Cigarettes on the 2600 block of Oswell Street on June 18 and assaulting the clerk before stealing cash from the register and a cigar box. He's described as a white man in his mid-20s with a tattoo on his left forearm and a small patch of black hair on his chin. While no one was seriously hurt in the crime, the store's employees are worried that it could happen again and be a lot worse. The store manager didn't want to be identified but says she's frustrated by crime, "You work everyday, you struggle and someone walks in and takes everything! It's depressive." Even though the employees have taken extra steps to stay safe, the manager says the crime has taken a toll. "Every time someone looks like him, and we're always checking, (we're) nervous, (we're) not working like before." Bakersfield Police are investigating the crime, but the manager wants more to be done. "If the government is taking so much taxes off of our shoulders do something with that money to protect us. I would like to have more security in the area." Bakersfield Police Detective Fred Calvillo says ever since the crime happened they are trying to patrol that area when they can. "Unfortunately, with the amount of calls we get sometimes it may make it difficult to do routine passes through there." He adds, "But you want to make (the patrols) infrequent so suspects aren't aware of when you're coming by." Even so, the store employees are feeling helpless. "Nothing you can do," is how the manager describes the situation. "Wait for the police department to work on it. Whatever you can do to help it, you do. I hope they catch him." Don Byrum, the property manager of the shopping center where Bargain Cigarettes is located, says currently there is not a private security company patrolling the area, but they are looking into hiring one. Anyone with information helpful to the investigation is asked to call police at (661) 326-3953. |
