BPD uses technology to fight crime trends
Bakersfield Police Chief Bill Rector By Bernadette Flores
The Bakersfield Police Department is using some new data to stop home burglaries before they happen.
Authorities are doing it with the help of some new computer technology. They say they are now able to produce daily crime reports to send out to detectives and officers on patrol. Before they could only produce weekly reports. The reports contain specific information such as location, time and type of crime. The reports analyze the information so officers can spot trends, such as when the peak times these crimes are happening. That way, they can send out extra officers to patrol during those times. So far, they've been able to track a large number of residential burglaries happening in south-central Bakersfield. As a result, for two weeks extra officers worked those neighborhoods and made more than 100 arrests. Officials will be looking for and targeting new hot spots in the coming months. They are also working on getting daily reports on the Internet so residents can look up crime trends in their neighborhoods. |
