More than 2,100 students are graduating this week from California State University, Bakersfield. The second of three graduation ceremonies was held Friday morning with two special guests - country music legend Merle Haggard and musician Buddy Alan, son of the late Buck Owens.

A plot of land in southwest Bakersfield is a hot topic for residents. Wearing matching yellow T-shirts, dozens of residents from the River Oaks neighborhood gathered Thursday night to voice their opposition to plans by Black Ops real estate. Black Ops plans to build a 100-unit condominium complex at the corner of River Run Boulevard and Elkhorn Creek Lane.

"It really came down to the folks in this neighborhood not wanting this project to go forward," Planning Commission member Elliott Kirschenmann said. "We didn't have one neighbor that was in support of this project, and to me, that was really the tipping point."

The first-reading ordinance was unanimously passed, and a process is now underway to ban medical marijuana shops in the city. City attorney Ginny Gennaro said enforcing the proposed ban would be complaint-driven, and that police would not go around boarding up businesses and arresting people.
