Suspect from Marketplace robbery gives jailhouse interview
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — The suspect involved in an officer-involved shooting spoke with Eyewitness News from behind bars.

Eric Miles Jr., 23, is facing charges in connection with an officer-involved shooting that police say started with a robbery – one Miles said he had nothing to do with.

"I was driving,” said Miles. “I was just driving, I was giving someone a ride, and then next thing I know, I'm getting shot at."

Brandon Burns is also charged in the robbery. Miles said he was just there to give burns a ride.

"(He was) supposed to be selling a cellphone to some guy, and the deal went bad I guess, and next thing I know, the guy taking off running," he said Friday.

Police said four suspects - including Miles and Burns - took off with a bag of cash.

They wouldn't stop for police, and investigators said that's when officers opened fire.

“I wasn't going to leave at first,” said Miles. "Until the car started getting shot at. Once bullets started coming in the car, and I felt that I got shot, I felt like my heart fell to my lap, and I just took off."

Police said they recovered the stolen cash in Miles’ car.

"My girlfriend Alicia gave me that money for Christmas shopping," explained Miles.

Miles said this is the latest in a string of unfortunate events and feels there is a "dark cloud" over his life.

"I told God, I feel that He should just take me right now instead of me going through all of this stuff that I'm going through." he said.

He's father to two children and said they're all he can think about.

“I want my kids right now, that's all I'm thinking about is my family and my kids. that's all I want," Miles said.
