Police: Woman being arrested grabs, shoots officer's gun

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — A police officer's gun was fired by a suspect Monday morning during a peace disturbance call in south Bakersfield.

Officer's were dispatched to the 5900 block of Hughes Lane, called about a woman creating some type of disturbance. While 34-year-old Adelaida Cortez was being arrested, she reached into an officer's holster and fired his gun into the ground, according to police.

The bullet hit the ground, but fragments or debris hit several people standing nearby, causing only minor injuries.

Cortez was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer, resisting arrest, being under the influence of a controlled substance and several other charges, according to police.
