Police and emergency vehicles are seen in the overnight hours Monday, Sept. 16, 2013, in the aftermath of a police gun battle with two suspects at the Four Points Sheraton hotel on California Avenue in Bakersfield, Calif.

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — The Bakersfield Police Department said Wednesday that a Monday morning gunfight between officers and two suspects was sparked by one of the suspects opening fire on officers.

Police got information that 32-year-old Justin Bryan Harger, a parolee wanted by local law enforcement and the U.S. Marshals Service, would be in the area of the Four Points Sheraton hotel on California Avenue.

Officers conducted surveillance in the area, saw Harger's vehicle arrive in the hotel parking lot, and officers conducted a traffic stop.

Harger and his passenger, 34-year-old Jorge Joel Ramirez, "immediately exited their vehicle and Harger opened fire on the officers and officers returned fire," a police news release reads.

Harger and Ramirez were killed in the shootout.

Officer Daniel Brewer suffered a gunshot wound to the head. His injury was called "moderate" by police.

Officer Rick Wimbish suffered a minor injury to his leg, according to police.

The firearm allegedly used by Harger was recovered at the scene, police said.

The investigation is continuing, and more information will be released in coming days, police said.
