BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) - A house fire Saturday afternoon claimed the life of a family's pet cat and spread to a neighbor's home before it was brought under control by city fire crews.

The fire in the 3500 block of Westchester Avenue was reported just after 1:30 p.m.

Smoke could be seen from miles away.

Neighbors said they smelled smoke and heard an explosion.

The man and woman who lived in the home got out with their dog, but their cat was later found dead inside the home's second story.

The fire also spread to a neighbor's home and caused some damage.

The cause of the fire wasn't immediately known.
