Bakersfield police: Street racer killed in crash

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — A street racer was killed Sunday night in a crash in southwest Bakersfield, according to police.

The man, driving a 1995 Honda Civic, crashed into a power pole just before 7 p.m. on the 6900 block of McCutchen Road while "involved in an illegal street racing contest," according to police.

The coroner's office early Monday identified the driver as 24-year-old Joe Manriquez.

Police said they are still investigating the crash and didn't release any information about other parties involved.

Police have recently cracked down on street racing by issuing citations, which people calling themselves "import enthusiasts" decry.
