17-year-old girl killed in Harris Road crash; racing blamed

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — A 17-year-old girl died and a man was rushed to a hospital Wednesday morning after a high-speed crash in southwest Bakersfield.

Authorities said the red Mercedes-Benz crashed just after 4 a.m. on Harris Road, between Old River Road and Mountain Vista Drive. A witness said the Mercedes and a Lexus SUV appeared to be in a "speed contest" at the time, according to police.

The driver of the Mercedes lost control and struck a block wall and light pole on the south side of Harris, causing the vehicle to roll over, police said. The man's name was withheld. The coroner's office identified the girl killed as Iman Badia Amin.

Police said the Mercedes was traveling more than 80 mph when it crashed.

Investigators are trying to find the Lexus driver, who they think could be 23-year-old Miguel Garcia. Anyone who knows where Garcia is should call police at (661) 327-7111.

That section of Harris was closed for most of the morning.
