BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — John Wren, who served as head coach of the South High School Rebels football team for the past seven years, died either Monday night of early Tuesday in his sleep.

He was 44 years old.

Fellow coaches and South High administrators confirmed Wren's death. They couldn't say what caused the coach's death.

Wren was a South High grad who, according to a Twitter page bearing his name, planned "to coach there forever."

Wren was also an English teacher, working at both South and Foothill high schools, according to district spokesman John Teves.
