BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) - A big rig driver was killed early Sunday when he crashed his truck into a light pole and then a tree on northbound Highway 99 just north of Taft Highway.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the big rig drifted off the highway shortly after 4 a.m.
The driver had to be cut out of the smashed cab by fire crews.
Environmental Health was called to the scene after the wrecked rig was loaded up for a tow for a possible diesel spill.
The crash is being investigated by the CHP.
Coroner's investigators identified the driver as 50-year-old Hugh Michael March of Santa Cruz.
"The decedent lost control of his big-rig and crashed head-on into a tree," said a news release from the coroner's office.
A search of public records showed that March lived in Las Vegas and worked for Pepsi.
