BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) -- A domestic disturbance call in a southeast Bakersfield neighborhood led to an officer involved shooting Sunday.

The incident happened just after 8 a.m. in the 5200 blk. of San Mateo Dr.

A department spokesman said officers were confronted by a man armed with a gun as they approached the residence. One officer fired his duty weapon when the man pointed his gun at them, and struck the suspect several times.

The suspect, who was later identified as 45-year-old Jaspal Singh, was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Neighbors said they thought Singh was already dead when he was put into the ambulance.

No officers were injured.

The officer who shot Singh has been put on routine administrative leave while the incident is investigated.

Anyone with information is encouraged to call the Bakersfield Police Department at (661) 327-7111.
