BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — Some residents were evacuated after an apartment complex manager discovered what was described as a duffel bag full of vials and beakers containing a white crystalline powder.

Bakersfield Fire Department hazmat crews investigated the situation at 929 E. Brundage Lane and discovered what they said was harmless sodium bicarbonate and zinc chloride.

The bag had been moved by the complex manager to a nearby storage shed before he called police.

All residents were allowed back in their apartments.

Bakersfield Police Department officials believed the substances were lab waste.
