BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) - Seven vehicles were heavily damaged early Sunday by fire, according to a Kern County Fire Department spokesman.

Cars and trucks along Blue Mountain Way, near 7th Standard Road and Airport Drive, were on fire around 4 a.m.

Resident Mitchell Shepard said two of his cars were destroyed. He said he awoke to "what sounded like fireworks" but was actually loud popping sounds from the burning cars.

Fire department spokesman Corey Wilford said they don't know the cause of the fires. The department isn't ready to publicly declare the fire as arson, he said.

Anyone with information helpful to the investigation is asked to call 1-877-Fire-Tip (877-347-3847).
