The first-reading ordinance was unanimously passed, and a process is now underway to ban medical marijuana shops in the city. City attorney Ginny Gennaro said enforcing the proposed ban would be complaint-driven, and that police would not go around boarding up businesses and arresting people.

From the earth-movers to tractors and construction workers, there is plenty going on along the Westside Parkway. Luis Topete, the lead engineer on the project, said Tuesday that the aim is to open the roadway by the first week of August.

The local real estate market is making a comeback, but local experts don't think it's headed for another so-called bubble. Long-time appraiser Gary Crabtree says home prices in Bakersfield have gone up 36 percent in the last 12 months, but he predicts a "more normal" market is ahead.
