More serious charges possible now that alleged assault victim is dead

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — A man from Tennessee died Friday in Kern Medical Center, two weeks after he was allegedly assaulted in the parking lot of the Vons shopping center on Olive Drive.

Witnesses told Kern County deputies that 39-year-old Richard Joseph Gilroy was involved in a physical confrontation with a motorist, later alleged to be 27-year-old Travis Michael Lamb. The sheriff's office didn't say what sparked the reported fight.

Deputies found Gilroy unconscious in the parking lot. He was taken to KMC, where he was until he died Friday of unspecified injuries.

Lamb was arrested March 29, and the sheriff's office said attempted murder and assault charges could be amended after review by the Kern County District Attorney's Office, now that Gilroy is dead.
