More destructive progress at PG&E's Kern Power Plant

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — Progress is being made in the demolition of the former Pacific Gas and Electric Co. Kern Power Plant, as some structures came down this week.

Four towering smokestacks were removed at the facility on the corner of Coffee Road and Rosedale Highway. Four fuel tanks were also removed this month.

Company officials say some of the 120-acre site's main structures are also expected to be demolished over the next couple months.

  • Mid-August – implode the plant’s boiler structures
  • Summer – site-wide soil and groundwater investigation ramps up
  • 2014 – environmental remediation resumes

PG&E publicly committed to clean up the site, acknowledging community concerns after several deals to sell the property fell through.
