BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — A man has been arrested on suspicion of shooting a market owner multiple times during a Monday robbery.

Virginio Zurita, 21, was also injured in an exchange of gunfire with the owner of La Perla Market, 60-year-old Fawzi Musaad. Zurita went to Kern Medical Center for medical care, and Bakersfield police officers responded to the hospital and interviewed him. Zurita, who had been shot in the lower back and ankle, claimed he had been shot at Maya Cinemas, according to Kern County Sheriff's Office spokesman Ray Pruitt.

Police officers seized the clothing Zurita was wearing at the hospital, and sheriff's detectives later used the clothing, surveillance video from the market and other evidence to link Zurita to the robbery.

Zurita was arrested and booked into county jail just after midnight Wednesday.

Pruitt said Musaad is expected to pull through.

Zurita faces likely charges of attempted murder, armed robbery and assault with a firearm, according to Pruitt.
