BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — A homicide investigation is underway after the Kern County Sheriff's Office found what officials called a badly decomposed body in a detached garage on the 900 block of Vista Street, near Niles and Oswell.

The identity of the body was withheld.

Eddie Rivas, 20, was taken into custody as a person of interest, according to the sheriff's office.

Deputies were alerted Tuesday by residents complaining of a bad smell.

A search of public records shows the home where the body was found belongs to a 53-year-old woman with the same last name as the person of interest.

Court records show Rivas was arrested in April 2011 and charged with assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer or fireman, possessing a stolen vehicle, reckless evading of a police officer, participating in a criminal street gang and resisting arrest.

He later pleaded to the assault charge, for which he was sentenced in June 2011 to three years in prison.
