Dennis Ozaeta is sentenced Tuesday, July 2, 2013, in Kern County court in Bakersfield, Calif., for charges stemming from a deadly 2012 crash.

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — A man who crashed into a 13-year-old boy riding a scooter was sentenced Tuesday to two years in prison and ordered to pay restitution.

Dennis Ozaeta killed the boy, Israel Chavez Medina, in the crash in June 2012 on Virginia Avenue at Larry Street.

California Highway Patrol officers tracked Ozaeta down at his home and determined he was under the influence of alcohol, according to its report. Investigators also said at the time that they believed Ozaeta knew he had hit something but left the crash site anyway.

Ozaeta, who was driving with his two children, ages 3 and 4, at the time, pleaded no contest to a felony count of hit-and-run causing death and a misdemeanor count of DUI.
