BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) - A man who was found slumped over the wheel of his SUV Saturday afternoon died a short time after being awakened by a fire explorer scout.

Police said the man drove away after being contacted in the 100 block of Jeffery Street and rolled his SUV a few blocks away, in front of Memorial Hospital.

The scout who tried to make contact with the man told police the driver appeared to be drunk. He followed him when he took off from Jeffery Street and witnessed the crash in the 400 block of 34th Street.

The driver was identified only as a 70-year-old man from Barstow. He died at a hospital after being cut from the SUV by rescue crews.
