BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — A bomb squad investigation Monday led to a store evacuation and traffic disruptions in the area of Bernard Street and Alta Vista Drive.

A suspicious backpack was ultimately found to contain only a cooler and tools. No one claimed the bag, said Kern County Sheriff's Office Sr. Deputy Erik Levig.

The Bakersfield Fire Department was called about the backpack around 10 a.m. The bag was found atop an electrical panel outside a Dollar General store.

The sheriff's department bomb squad tried peering into the bag with an x-ray machine, which didn't work. So, they used a "disrupter device" to open the bag and examine its contents.
