BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — A 29-year-old Bakersfield man died early Saturday after crashing his pickup truck into a traffic signal on Highway 178 and Canteria Drive.

The crash was reported around 1:40 a.m.

"The investigation revealed that an adult male was driving a Chevrolet S10 pickup truck west on Highway 178 when his vehicle collided with a traffic signal at Canteria Drive," police said in a news release. The driver was taken to a local hospital, where he later died.

The driver was the only person in the pickup, according to Lt. Jason Matson.

Hwy. 178 was closed in both directions at the intersection until around 8:30 a.m. so the crash could be investigated and cleaned up.

The victim was later identified as Stephen D. Ehret, of Bakersfield. According to Ehret's Facebook page, he lived in Bakersfield and attended East Bakersfield High.
