Musical talent in spotlight for 'Grand Night'

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — See the best high school musicians and singers in Kern County next week at the annual It's a Grand Night for Music event.

The evening of music is 7 p.m. Jan. 29 at Rabobank Theatre, according to the Kern County Superintendent of Schools. Entry is a $5 donation.

It's a Grand Night for Music began as a music festival strictly for elementary school orchestras in 1948 but evolved into the showcase for high school musical talent. An event for elementary and middle school students, the Kern County Honor Music Festival, will be Feb. 26 at the Rabobank Theatre.

It's a Grand Night for Music will feature:

  • Tchaikovsky's "Valse from Sleeping Beauty"
  • Arturo Marquez's "Danzon No. 2"
  • Robert Schumann's "Zigeuerleben (Gypsy Life)"
  • Eliza Gilkyson's "Requiem"
  • Brad Holmes' "Star in the East"
  • David Dickau's "If Music Be the Food of Love"
  • Byron J. Smith's "Shout Glory!"
  • Claude T. Smith's "God of Our Fathers"
  • Steven Bryant's "Dusk"
  • John Mackey's "Strange Humors"
  • Dmitri Shostakovich's "Prelude Op. 87"
  • Dmitri Shostakovich's "Galop"
